Sustainability and environmental protection on many levels

Ofa Bamberg, with sites in Bamberg, Glauchau, Maastricht and Salzburg, has been part of the INDUS portfolio for almost a quarter of a century and is committed to environmental protection across the board.

We have been familiar with the sustainable Lastofa Verde compression stocking for a while now. It is sustainable because it is largely made from the renewable, plant-based raw material castor oil. Production is also particularly environmentally friendly because it is naturally coloured using walnut shells.

Memory and BELSANA Microsoft

The sustainable innovation in Ofa Bamberg’s product portfolio is a new type of yarn for the fashionable Memory and BELSANA Microsoft compression stockings. The yarn is made from an unusual material that is otherwise difficult to recycle: Used tyres! An innovative recycling process converts used tyres into a raw material for the production of polyamide, which is indispensable in the manufacture of compression stockings due to its elasticity. As an alternative raw material, it replaces a large proportion of the crude oil that is actually required. As a fossil fuel, this can be saved on site and CO2 emissions can be reduced by around 67% compared to the production of conventional polyamide. In addition, the classic, often harmful disposal of used tyres is no longer necessary.

Biomass plant

Another very special project has now been realised in record time at Ofa Bamberg. It took just 6 months from the ground-breaking ceremony to the commissioning of the new biomass plant. Once the plant goes into live operation, which is due to take place shortly after TÜV certification, the heating and hot water supply at the Bamberg site and the in-house dye works will be supplied with heat. With the heat that will be generated in future by the wood-fired steam boiler, the plant is expected to save around 500 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Ofa Bamberg is not only focussed on energy efficiency and resource-saving processes in product development and supplying the company, the “S” in ESG also receives a great deal of attention from the management. After all, people are also an important resource for the company as sources of ideas, developers and users of innovations. Find out what ace the SME has up its sleeve when it comes to recruiting staff in the next INDUS sustainability magazine SUSTA[IN] #4, which will be published shortly.
